Greenville Community Engagement Director Micah McBay shares information about the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum in Greenville for the Standard’s Texas Museum Map series:

Nestled among 10 acres in the heart of Hunt County, Texas, the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum has explored the fascinating history of this region for over 35 years.

Join us on a journey of discovery that will take you through the heyday of the cotton fields in the 1800s to the battlefields of the 20th century.

Greenville was home to the world’s largest inland cotton compress, which set a world record in 1911 and 1912. Walk through a World War I trench and visit exhibits on World War II to learn about the heroes that came from our county.

Born into a poor sharecropping family near Kingston, Texas, no one knew what future awaited Audie Murphy. He became the most decorated soldier of World War II, earning every medal possible, including the Medal of Honor, all before turning 21. And that is just the beginning of his story.

The museum is located about 40 minutes east of Dallas, along I-30. Every month there are activities happening at the museum, including a speaker series, movie nights, Audie Murphy Day, Frontier Day, and so much more.
