Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, a Houston Democrat, recently said that Latinas make less than 45 cents for every dollar a man makes. “That makes us 49th in the nation,” Fletcher said.
Is that a fact? Madlin Mekelburg of the PolitiFact Texas fact-checking team has the answer.
Fletcher tweeted the comment on Latina Equal Pay Day – Nov. 20. That’s the date in 2019 that reflects how long a Latina would have to have worked before her pay equaled what a non-Hispanic white man would have made in 2018. Fletcher was advocating for the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act in the Senate, which aims to strengthen the existing Equal Pay Act.
In her tweet, Fletcher was particularly focused on pay disparities in Texas.
