It’s time for the week that was in Texas politics with James Barragán, political reporter for The Texas Tribune.

Another Republican has joined the race for attorney general. State Rep. Matt Krause, a founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, is the third serious Republican candidate in the race. Two Democrats are also running. Krause has been close to incumbent Ken Paxton in the past.

Barragán says Krause believes Paxton’s ongoing legal troubles are a distraction  from his work as attorney general.

“He thinks that he can bring a conservative voice to the attorney general’s office,” Barragán said.

The new abortion law is facing a court challenge. The U.S. Department of Justice  asked a federal court to stop implementation of the law. The court denied the request, but did grant a hearing on the case, saying it was too complex for a simple injunction. The hearing is set for October 1.
