Typewriter Rodeo: We Can Be Heroes

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The everyday looks different for everybody right now. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

We Can Be Heroes

you hear a lot about heroes these days

the nurses

the teachers

the cashiers

the bus drivers

the delivery drivers

the poll workers

the meatpackers

the moms

the dads

the single parents

the single people

the scared

the lonely

the kids stuck inside

the grandparents stuck inside, too

and all of us

all of us

in between

here’s a wonder

and a question

for every one of us all:

the last time you sang

land of the free

and home of the brave,

did you think you’d ever take it

quite so literally?

and yet, here we are

each of us in our home of the brave

each of us fighting our way through the days

heroes, all

in each our own way
