The agreement is also aimed at protecting artists from AI-generated versions of their music, even as UMG signs a deal with Spotify that seems to do the opposite.

Under a new deal with music publisher Universal Music Group, or UMG, artists like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter will continue to be heard on TikTok, resolving outstanding issues of copyright and royalty payments.

The agreement also aims to give artists some protection against AI-generated content, even as another recent UMG deal, this time with Spotify, seems to do the opposite.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga says it’s all about whether TikTok creators can use music from UMG artists.

Highlights from this segment:

– In 2024, UMG pulled music from TikTok, preventing creators from using songs by the company’s artists in their own videos. The initial issues have been resolved, but this new agreement sets out more specifics for UMG and TikTokers.

– Under the deal, artists will be protected from AI-based alterations of their music, and artists will have better access to marketing and promotion through TikTok.

– The Spotify/UMG agreement allows users to make remixes, parodies and other versions of songs, using AI. Spotify users will have to pay extra for access to a tool they can use to make AI music.
